The early bird gets the passport, in Wiscasset

It may only take the promise of a worm for a bird to be an early riser. But what about you?
Do you need an incentive to get up this Saturday, Nov. 9, for Wiscasset's early bird sales? Something besides the chunky discounts, freebie snacks and the jump on holiday shopping?
The Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce has you covered.
The chamber is starting year two of its “Think Outside the Box” buy local campaign on Early Bird Saturday, a full month earlier than when “Box” premiered in 2012, chamber officials said.
That means Saturday's great deals that start at 5:30 a.m. will also be helping shoppers rack up stamps toward a shot at, yes, some fabulous prizes.
Twenty-six businesses will be stamping shoppers' festive, bell-themed, “Box” passports for every $20 spent (up to five stamps per purchase). Every set of five stamps gets an entry into a December 21 drawing at Le Garage, 15 Water Street.
No limit on entries. Every completed, five-stamp passport can go in the drawings.
The Wiscasset Town Office, the Wiscasset Community Center, and the Wiscasset branches of the Bank of Maine and The First will all have drop boxes for completed passports. So will ALL PLaY Family Entertainment Center in Waldoboro.
Passports need to be in the drop boxes by 4 p.m. December 21, or brought to Le Garage by 7 p.m. that day to make it into the drawings, according to a chamber press release.
This year's donations include two separate grand prize getaways: a night at the Samoset Resort in Rockport and two nights at Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins in Greenville.
The chambers here and in Greenville exchanged the lodge's donation with one by Newkirk Inn in Wiscasset, said Wiscasset chamber board member Deb Schaffer.
Schaffer owns DebraElizabeths at 78 Main St.

Ames Supply co-owner Wayne Averill predicted this year's holiday shopping season will be a good one. Business has been great all fall, he said.
The store will have free coffee and doughnuts for early bird customers, Averill said.
Following Saturday's early bird sales, a series of fun and varied events will keep Wiscasset's holiday vibe going in November and December.
Maine Eastern Railroad on Railroad Avenue will have its Toys 'N Turkeys Train in town from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on November 16. Have some refreshments and drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable foods and new, unwrapped toys.
On November 30, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., seafaring tunes at Sarah's Cafe will be part of Small Business Saturday.
December 6 is the day the teddy bears have their sleepover at the Wiscasset Community Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The center is also the site of a December 21 breakfast with Santa. Call 207-882-8230 for more on those events.
The man in red will also visit Maine's prettiest village on December 7. He, Rudolph and Frosty are due to arrive by boat again this year, at 3 p.m., as part of a 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. celebration at the Wiscasset Commercial Pier. Plans call for fire pits, horse-drawn carriage rides, children's activities and nonprofits selling hot refreshments.
Stick around December 7 for the 4:30 p.m. tree-lighting on the town common, in front of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.
