Tiny (lobster) twaps
Are you looking for a special present for a little one? A present that will remind him or her of all the fun they had during their summer in Maine, a present that is unique to Boothbay?
Lobsterman Christopher Hodgdon has just the thing for you. And the price won’t break the bank.
How about a “Tiny (Lobster) Twap”? That’s right, a mini lobster trap, made of coated wire and all set out like the real thing.
Hodgdon, a Barters Island native who fishes in the Sheepscot River, was joined by his wife Krystle at the Fall Foliage Festival on October 12 where they sold the pint-sized traps.
Hodgdon, who builds traps for his own use and for sale, said he was making traps in his shop one day while watching his son Benjamin.
“He was bored out of his mind and bouncing off the walls. So I thought, why not make him one. He loved it,” said Hodgdon.
Soon, the little toy trap was the hit of the neighborhood.
“I made one for my neighbor’s kid. Then we made one for our daughter’s preschool and the kids fought over it,” said Krystle Hodgdon.
The “Tiny Twaps” (that is what the Hodgdons call them) were a hit with Alan (Scrimpy) Lewis, an East Boothbay grandfather, who purchased one.
“I take my grandson lobstering in the Mill Pond and he loves to pull the traps just to see if we catch a keeper,” said Lewis.
“Now I have to hide this until Christmas,” he said.
If you missed out on a chance to buy one at the Fall Foilage Festival, Hodgdon’s “Tiny Twaps” can be purchased at the Trevett Store and Ames Hardware in Wiscasset.
