Wiscasset chamber draws praise
Tamara Lilly worked renting rooms in Edgecomb for a succession of business owners, until about six years ago. On Thursday night, Sept. 15, she praised the Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce for forming and growing since then.
Co-hosting a WACC “Business After Hours” event, Lilly, now a business support specialist for Burgess Technology Services (BTS), recalled seeing a prior effort under way for area businesses to work together, when she was working at the Edgecomb Inn. “So I know the history of trying to make something like this go, in this area ... And then when I came back, I found this chamber was here, and growing, and continuing to thrive ... I’ve gone to the annual dinners, and when I look at the support, I’m impressed and really pleased for Wiscasset, that you guys have got this going ... It’s a great community ... and you’ve got this great chamber, so congratulations on that.”
Lilly said that because BTS is based in Bath, she was grateful to get to help put on a WACC event by sharing hosting duties with the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission (LCRPC), at the commission’s office on Bath Road.
The commission moved into the space about 11 months ago, LCRPC Economic and Community Developmet Director Mary Ellen Barnes said. “We are developing this into an economic resource center, slowly but steadily, we hope,” Barnes told attendees. The meeting room where the event was being held that night is one of the key things that led the county to buy the building, she said. In addition tg meetings focused on businesses, the Mid Coast Food Pantry and a few other nonprofits meet there, she said.
In remarks to attendees, Chamber Board Chairman Monique McRae cited the upcoming scarecrow contest for businesses and organizations. “It will be a fun time,” she said. She advised members to watch for registration forms and then use their imaginations in making the scarecrows; and McRae noted planning is ongoing for a “holiday marketplace” event.
“So we’re not stagnant, by any means. We’re really moving along and doing things,” McRae said. The annual meeting is coming up next February, she added.
