Damariscotta board tables Maine-Ly Pawn permit request
Maine-Ly Pawn’s request to have items outdoors at the Main Street, Damariscotta, business is in limbo after a Planning Board meeting Monday night. The board had expected to meet with Hoffman and resume talks on his request for a conditional use permit; however, Hoffman said Tuesday, he didn’t know he was on the agenda.
“This is absolutely news to me,” he said in a telephone interview.
Hoffman was not at Monday’s meeting; the board tabled the item and directed Town Planner Anthony Dater to ask Hoffman to contact him when he would like to go back before the board, Dater said Tuesday.
Hoffman was placed on the agenda based on the board’s discussion with Hoffman at a December meeting, Dater said; he said he sent Hoffman the January agenda in an email Dec. 22.
Hoffman, who co-owns the business with wife Jennie Hoffman, said it may be spring before he seeks his next meeting with the board. He would not be able to get a fence into the ground over the winter and does not expect to need a permit over the winter, he said.
“Our backs are not up against the wall. We don’t feel like we need to rush to a judgment on a proposal,” Hoffman said. He still plans to seek the permit but will work on his next offers to the board, before asking to get on the agenda, he said.
Also Monday, the board determined that an 8-foot-by-12-foot signboard for up to four businesses at Coppola Professional Building at 590 Main Street is permitted under town rules, Dater said.
The board continued drafting a new sign ordinance that will be the subject of a 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11 workshop in the town hall conference room. A proposed ordinance would need town meeting approval to take effect, Dater said.
